How Do I Know if I’m Meditating Correctly?
Some of the most commonly researched questions on the internet regarding meditation are as follows:
“What is meditation?”
“How do I know if I’m meditating correctly?”
“How to start meditating”
“The effects of meditation”
“Can I meditate at home?”
Of these common searches, we’ve already discussed most of these topics. However, “How do I know if I’m meditating correctly” not only hasn’t been addressed yet, but it also receives over 35,000 monthly searches, making it a valid question to address on the Monroe Institute blog.
Gateway is for those seeking to work with Monroe’s techniques and technologies to explore levels of consciousness while opening the door for illuminating self-discoveries.
Simply put, there is no “correct” way to meditate. Meditation is a process that should be personal to you. It’s not something you just “do,” it’s a fluid experience that changes based on your needs and how you are feeling at any given time. Meditation comes with goals that are ever-changing and ever-evolving, so it’s not something that you will simply “do correctly.” Try not to look at meditation as something you can do the right way or the wrong way, but instead see it as a set daily time you get to spend with yourself. To me, meditation is about being comfortable in my own energies, sometimes in quiet, other times through a guided process. It’s time I take every day to feel gratitude and use that gratitude to focus on a goal, which can be anything from healing to manifesting to relaxing to being mindful. So, rather than wondering if you’re doing it correctly, ask what goal you’d like to set as you meditate. Luckily for us, the Expand app exists to guide us if we’re unsure how to proceed.
First, if you haven’t meditated before or are new to it, I highly encourage you to attend Gateway Voyage at the Monroe Institute. Gateway Voyage is Robert Monroe’s ground-breaking experimental consciousness retreat that helps you expand your awareness and find your own answers. Gateway is for those seeking to work with Monroe’s techniques and technologies to explore levels of consciousness while opening the door for illuminating self-discoveries.
Regardless of whether or not you’ve experienced Gateway, the Expand app is available to guide you through your journey from home every single day. What I love the most about Expand is its hundreds of guided meditations geared for different goals and experiences, so you can choose what best suits your needs at the time. It’s also a great reminder of how fluid your practise can be, to be able to go in daily and utilize Expand for a variety of experiences.

The Expand app can support you with exercises that feature music enhanced with Monroe Sound Science, and sessions via the ‘Timer’ part of the app where you can pick your signals to meditate with for any amount of time you like. Expand offers guided as well as unguided sessions to use for whatever you’d like to explore.
All in all, if you are new to meditation, please don’t think there is a correct way to do it. Know that whatever works for you works for you, and meditation is not the same from person to person. However, be sure to visit the Expand app to gain insights and try guided exercises that will help you begin to understand your own meditation exercises and what exactly meditation could mean to you.
